Helping renters turn the rent they already pay into financial stability.

For many young US renters, rent takes a large share of their income, yet paying it on time does almost nothing for their credit or savings. As the only designer, I designed MIOGAR from sign-up to dashboards for three groups: renters, their landlords, and people staying with family. It connects each renter to their landlord so their rent can count, and coaches them through the money around it.

Key outcomes: One app for renters, landlords and people with no lease · Renters matched to their landlord with no codes or invites.

The Problem

MIOGAR is for young US renters building their financial footing. For many of them, rent is the biggest bill they have. Half of all US renters, a record 22.6 million households, spent 30% or more of their income on housing and utilities in 2023. Paying it on time takes real effort, but fewer than 5% of renters have their rent reported to credit bureaus. Years of on-time rent can leave no trace on the credit report they'll need for a better place.

People staying with family or friends have it harder still: with no lease, their housing leaves no record at all. In the founder's words, "MIOGAR needs to be a tool for everyone on the housing journey, not just people with formal leases."

The goal of the product was financial stability through housing.

How might we help renters turn the rent they already pay into progress towards financial stability?

Solution

I designed a solution that made rent count, made money easier to follow, and gave people with no lease a way in.

To make rent count, I connected renters to their landlords. Landlords add their properties and renters, and MIOGAR matches each renter to their unit automatically. If the landlord isn't on MIOGAR yet, the renter can invite them. Renters verify their identity so their rent can be reported to credit bureaus. Landlords got a dashboard that shows rent collected and outstanding.

To make money easier to follow, the renter's dashboard shows a stability score, where their money went.

For people with no lease, I added "I'm staying with family or friends" as a sign-up option. They track what they contribute at home and what they save for a first apartment, and their history moves with them when they sign a lease.

Outcome

MIOGAR is in development, so there are no results yet.
